Renowned Hungarian theatre closes due to the crisis

The well-known and loved Katona József National Theatre in Kecskemét will close for January. The decision was forced on the management by the energy crisis.

The Kecskemét theatre posted the following message on Facebook: “From 1 January 2023, all three venues of the Katona József National Theatre in Kecskemét will be closed. The main theatre and the studio theatre will reopen on 1 February, while the chamber theatre will only resume work in mid-March. The decision taken by the management is unavoidable, but we assure you that you will not miss anything this season.”

Season ticket holders can be reassured that the number of performances will be maintained, and those who would like to buy tickets can do so on the ground floor of the Malom Centre during closing hours, 24.hu reports.

The institution in Kecskemét is the umpteenth theatre to take a forced winter break. Some of them will only have performances on weekends. In Miskolc, a fundraising campaign has been launched for the theatre. In Szeged, a whole series of cultural institutions are closing. Those that will remain open are also worried across the country: will they have an audience even in the middle of the crisis?
